The wedge (compression) ring exerts direct compressional force\/contact to the fork tube. The same can be said for an SCS clamp (or even the bars\/clamp in an ICS\/HIC scenario). However, headset spacers and dust covers are just free floating spacers that move less, but still exert non-clamping forces onto the forktube. This means that the air gap between the wedge (compression) ring and dust cover is \u003cstrong\u003ecompletely\u003c\/strong\u003e unsupported which allows for flex in that region. Flex = Fatigue = Broken forktube. Forks always break above the wedge (compression) ring, and below the clamp.
