Scooter Brakes

There are two types of “brakes” for a scooter. There is a traditional flex brake. This gets mounted on the rear of the deck and is usually either a steel brake or a nylon brake with a steel insert that flexes when you step down to slow you down. The second type is not a brake, actually, but is called a Fender. A fender gets mounted in the same place as a brake but does not flex or help you slow down your scooter. Its only purpose is to prevent you from hitting or rubbing your foot on the rear wheel.

Decks will have pre-installed holes at the top or bottom of your deck for mounting. All that is needed to be done is to remove the rear wheel, slide the brake into position, and then insert the bolt(s) into the deck’s bolt holes. Then, tighten the hardware, and you’re good to go!

Due to the urethane compound that scooter wheels use, you must be sure you are not abruptly stepping on your brake or pressing down on it too hard. Doing this will result in your wheel forming ‘flat spots’ leading to it rolling roughly. Instead, you should be lightly pressing down on the brake to come to a stop slowly. Some people step or slide their foot on the floor to slow down rather than using the brake. This allows your wheels to last longer but can wear down your shoes, so keep that in mind!
